Photo Gallery: KC Artists, Creative Leaders Converge for ARTcap Gathering at KCAI
Kansas City’s arts community thrives on collaboration and connection — and on Aug. 12, that spirit was on full display.
More than sixty artists and arts organization leaders gathered at the Kansas City Art Institute’s Vanderslice Hall, filling the Fernery and Kemper Terrace with conversation, collaboration, and creative energy.
The occasion was AltCap’s latest gathering to celebrate the Kansas City arts community and ARTcap-funded businesses.
ARTcap is designed with the belief that creatives not only enrich communities but also serve vital roles in the economy. Through microloans up to $20,000, ARTcap helps creative entrepreneurs in Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas grow their businesses. Whether used for supplies, equipment, or space improvements, these microloans are tailored to meet the needs of creative professionals.
Guests mingled among a backdrop of fresh florals from Vetiver Co. Floral Design, bites from Billie’s Grocery, and cocktails and mocktails by Sidecar Cocktail Catering Co. Singer Talya Groves provided the soundtrack as clusters of conversation emerged across the terrace.
AltCap CEO Ruben Alonso, joined by ARTcap Administrator Jennifer Lapka, welcomed the crowd with a toast that set the tone for the evening.
“It was such a wonderful evening and great to connect with some incredible colleagues and practitioners in the arts and cultural sectors,” reflected Jessica Hong, Chief Curator of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.
Guests carried business cards, brochures, and program announcements, ready to share opportunities and ideas. Some exchanged exhibition details; others sparked collaborations on the spot.
“It is always so fun being in an energy-filled room with artists and art-loving people,” said Lindsay Kinney, Associate Director of No Divide KC.
The simple format — unhurried conversations over food and music — proved powerful. From seasoned professionals to first-time attendees, one sentiment was consistent: Kansas City’s creative ecosystem is stronger when its people are in the same room.
“AltCap is such an inspiring and essential organization, especially in these challenging times,” said Jac Dalbey, Manager of Special Events and Space Rental for the Kansas City Art Institute. “It was wonderful to see artists and arts organizations come together to network and connect.”
